The MICHIGAN UNDERGROUND RAILROAD EXPLORATORY COLLECTIVE (MUREC), formally The International Underground Railroad Collaborative, having successfully completed its original quest to establish monuments on both sides of the Detroit River in honor of the Underground Railroad, (Gateway to Freedom, Hart Plaza, Detroit, MI, U.S. & the Tower of Freedom, Windsor, Ontario, Canada) now recognizes a new mission.
The stories, locations, and personalities of the Michigan Underground Railroad are still unfamiliar to most state residents. MUREC is now dedicated to evaluating these narratives in the state’s elementary, middle, high school and college curriculum, community celebrations, and state history. It is believed that scholarly research and wide exposure of Michigan’s Underground Railroad history will help to dispel the widespread myths and erroneous information regarding African American contributions to the Great Lakes Region’s history.
