The Underground Railroad was the hope and savior of tens of thousands of slaves escaping to the promised land and freedom.
The Underground Railroad at its height encompassed thousands of miles of trails, safe houses and people of good will who helped slaves along the way.
Many slaves made the perilous journey from the slave holding states north to become free and settled in the Northern States including Michigan and as well as Canada.
